Language Requirements
• English proficiency required for resident care, documentation, and team communication
• Clear verbal communication essential for safety and quality care delivery
• Ability to understand care plans and medical instructions
• Professional communication with residents, families, and healthcare team
Education Requirements
• College, CEGEP, or other non-university certificate or diploma from program of 1 year to 2 years
• Continuing Care Assistant Certification required
• Personal Support Worker (PSW) certification accepted
• Health Care Aide diploma recognized
• Nursing Assistant certification acceptable
• Equivalent international credentials evaluated individually
Experience Requirements
• No previous experience required – complete training will be provided
• Recent graduates from Continuing Care Assistant programs encouraged to apply
• Previous experience in long-term care, nursing homes, or healthcare settings considered an asset
• Demonstrated compassion and commitment to senior care
• Clinical placement or practicum experience valued
Required Credentials and Certifications
• Valid Continuing Care Assistant Certification (mandatory)
• Registration or eligibility for registration with provincial regulatory body
• Current CPR certification preferred
• First Aid certification beneficial
• Current immunizations as per Nova Scotia Health requirements
• Clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening
Key Responsibilities
Personal Care and Support:
• Provide comprehensive personal care to residents with dignity and respect
• Assist clients with bathing and all aspects of personal hygiene
• Help residents with dressing, grooming, and toileting needs
• Support residents with mobility, transfers, and positioning
• Administer bedside and personal care according to care plans
• Ensure resident comfort and well-being throughout all care activities
• Maintain privacy and dignity during personal care
• Encourage resident independence while providing necessary assistance
Health Monitoring and Clinical Support:
• Help clients manage physical illness and disorders
• Monitor patients continuously and observe for changes in condition
• Advise physician and nursing staff of any changes in patients’ condition immediately
• Take and record vital signs including blood pressure, temperature, and pulse
• Document observations and care provided accurately
• Assist with medications under nursing supervision
• Support residents with chronic conditions and complex needs
• Recognize and report signs of distress, illness, or deterioration
Physical Care and Rehabilitation:
• Exercise regularly to maintain physical ability and physical fitness for care demands
• Assist residents with range of motion exercises and mobility programs
• Support rehabilitation and restorative care activities
• Help residents maintain functional abilities
• Use proper body mechanics and transfer techniques
• Operate mechanical lifts and assistive devices safely
• Position residents to prevent pressure injuries and promote comfort
Communication and Coordination:
• Communicate effectively with other workers to coordinate preparation and completion of work assignments
• Participate in shift handovers and care conferences
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary team including nurses, physicians, therapists, and support staff
• Share important information about resident status and needs
• Document care activities and observations clearly
• Respond to call bells and resident requests promptly
• Communicate compassionately with residents and families
Nutrition and Meal Support:
• Assist residents with meals and feeding
• Monitor and document food and fluid intake
• Support residents with special dietary needs
• Encourage adequate nutrition and hydration
• Report changes in appetite or eating patterns
Activities of Daily Living:
• Support residents with all activities of daily living
• Help residents maintain routines and preferences
• Assist with social and recreational activities
• Provide companionship and emotional support
• Create positive, engaging environment for residents
• Respect resident choices and autonomy
Environmental Care:
• Maintain clean, safe, and comfortable resident environments
• Ensure beds are made and rooms are tidy
• Keep resident areas organized and accessible
• Follow infection prevention and control protocols
• Maintain safety standards throughout facility
Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities
• Physically demanding work requiring strength and stamina
• Lifting, transferring, and positioning residents regularly
• Standing, walking, bending, and moving throughout shifts
• Working day, night, weekend, and rotating shifts
• Overtime available during staffing needs
• Repetitive tasks including personal care and documentation
• Ability to lift and assist with residents (up to 50 lbs with equipment)
• Emotional resilience when caring for elderly and end-of-life residents
• Fast-paced healthcare environment requiring efficiency
• Exposure to bodily fluids and personal care tasks
• Working in healthcare facility 7 days per week, 24 hours per day
