Experience

• 1 year to less than 2 years of experience as a stonemason, bricklayer, mason helper, or similar trade
• Experience with residential or commercial masonry, stonework, or parging is an asset
• Employer will provide on-the-job guidance to align with company standards

Work Setting

Key Responsibilities

Masonry Installation and Construction:
• Prepare and lay bricks, concrete blocks, structural tiles, or other masonry units according to specifications
• Lay bricks, stone, or similar materials to provide veneer facing on buildings and structures
• Construct and install prefabricated masonry units efficiently and accurately
• Mix mortar to proper consistency and apply evenly for strong, durable bonds
• Ensure proper alignment, level, and plumb of all masonry work using levels, plumb bobs, and measuring tools
• Create clean, consistent mortar joints with appropriate tooling
• Build walls, partitions, arches, and other masonry structures to code requirements
• Install brick and stone features including columns, retaining walls, and decorative elements

Specialized Masonry Work:
• Lay bricks or other masonry units to build residential or commercial chimneys and fireplaces
• Construct fireboxes, flues, and chimney stacks following safety codes and regulations
• Install firebrick and refractory materials in fireplaces and heating appliances
• Build outdoor fireplaces, fire pits, and BBQ structures
• Ensure proper draft, ventilation, and safety in all chimney and fireplace installations
• Apply expertise in structural masonry for load-bearing walls and foundations

Cutting and Shaping:
• Cut and trim bricks and concrete blocks to specification using hand and power tools
• Use masonry saws, chisels, hammers, and cutting tools to achieve precise fits
• Shape and dress stone for custom installations
• Cut openings for windows, doors, vents, and utilities
• Create custom angles, curves, and decorative patterns
• Minimize waste through accurate measuring and cutting

Restoration and Maintenance:
• Restore, clean, or paint existing masonry structures to renew appearance and integrity
• Repoint and repair deteriorated mortar joints in existing brickwork and stonework
• Replace damaged or broken bricks, blocks, or stones
• Clean masonry surfaces using appropriate techniques and chemicals
• Apply protective sealers and coatings to masonry work
• Assess structural issues and recommend repair solutions
• Preserve historic masonry while meeting modern building standards

Height Work and Safety:
• Work safely at heights on scaffolding, swing stages, and aerial platforms
• Erect, use, and dismantle scaffolding according to safety regulations
• Secure tools, materials, and equipment when working at elevation
• Follow fall protection protocols and use appropriate personal protective equipment
• Conduct safety inspections of scaffolding and work platforms before use
• Maintain clean, organized, hazard-free work areas on all job sites
• Adhere to all construction site safety rules and company policies

Blueprint Reading and Planning:
• Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications
• Calculate materials needed for projects to minimize waste
• Plan work sequences for efficient project completion
• Coordinate with other trades including carpenters, roofers, and concrete workers
• Communicate progress and challenges to supervisors and project managers
• Ensure finished work meets design specifications and quality standards

Quality Control:
• Inspect completed masonry work to ensure it meets quality and code standards
• Correct any defects or imperfections in workmanship
• Clean excess mortar and finish joints for professional appearance
• Ensure structural integrity and weather resistance of all installations
• Take pride in delivering durable, aesthetically pleasing masonry work
• Maintain high standards of craftsmanship on every project

• Physically demanding work requiring strength, stamina, and endurance
• Handling heavy loads including bricks, blocks, stone, mortar, and equipment regularly
• Lifting and carrying materials weighing 50-80 lbs frequently throughout the day
• Standing for extended periods while laying bricks and blocks
• Bending, crouching, and kneeling repeatedly during masonry installation

• Working at heights on ladders, scaffolding, and swing stages
