Job Overview
Valentine Sherbrooke is looking for a courteous, energetic Assistant Waiter/Waitress to support our front-of-house team and help deliver fast, friendly service to our guests. You will assist with greeting customers, taking orders, serving food and beverages, clearing tables, and ensuring the dining area stays clean and welcoming. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys working with the public, can stay calm and organized during busy periods, and wants to build solid experience in Quebec’s food service industry. Training is provided, making this a great opportunity for both local candidates and newcomers to Canada.

Key Responsibilities (Tasks)

  • Greet patrons in a friendly and professional manner, present menus, and answer basic questions about food and beverages
  • Make menu recommendations and upsell items (combos, desserts, beverages) according to customer preferences and promotions
  • Take orders accurately and relay them to kitchen and bar staff using the restaurant’s ordering system
  • Ensure orders are delivered correctly and promptly to the right tables or take-out customers
  • Serve food and beverages, checking that presentation and temperatures meet restaurant standards
  • Prepare and serve simple or specialty foods at patrons’ tables when required
  • Refill drinks, condiments, and side items as needed, maintaining attentive service throughout the meal
  • Clear and reset tables quickly and efficiently between customers
  • Present bills to patrons, explain charges if needed, and accept payment (cash, card, or electronic) accurately
  • Assist with ordering and maintaining inventory of beverages and glassware when requested by the supervisor
  • Follow procedures for recommending and serving beverages; where applicable, recommend suitable drink pairings for meals
  • Perform basic sensory evaluation (appearance, aroma, taste) of beverages when required as part of quality checks
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in the dining area, service stations, and workspaces
  • Support general restaurant duties, including stocking service areas, polishing cutlery and glassware, and refilling supplies
  • Follow food safety, hygiene, and health and safety regulations at all times

Additional Assistant Waiter/Waitress Duties

  • Set up and prepare the dining room for service (arranging tables, chairs, place settings, condiments)
  • Assist with opening and closing duties as directed (cleaning tasks, restocking, basic reporting)
  • Coordinate with kitchen staff to ensure smooth service and accurate timing of courses
  • Provide courteous assistance to customers with disabilities, families with children, and large groups

  • Fast-paced environment, particularly during meal rushes
  • Standing and walking for extended periods throughout the shift
  • Repetitive tasks such as carrying trays, clearing tables, and wiping surfaces
  • Bending, reaching, and occasional lifting of items such as trays, boxes of supplies, and cleaning equipment
  • Need for strong attention to detail in order taking, order delivery, and payment handling
  • Work under pressure while maintaining a positive attitude and professional appearance
