Job Overview
Roy McMurtry Youth Centre is seeking caring and skilled Registered Nurses to join our inter-professional health care team in a secure youth justice setting. This is an opportunity to practice a broad scope of nursing in an unconventional environment, providing comprehensive health assessment, treatment, and education to youth with diverse and often complex needs. Education and Licensing

• Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
• Nursing education meeting CNO requirements for RN registration (e.g., BScN or equivalent)

Mandatory Requirements

• Current registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) with the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Current First Aid certification
• Current CPR certification

Experience

• Experience as a Registered Nurse is an asset (acute care, emergency, mental health, primary care, or correctional health experience are all considered strong assets)
• Newer RNs with strong clinical skills and interest in correctional/youth health are encouraged to apply

Key Responsibilities (Tasks)

• Provide professional nursing services for triage and ongoing care to youth in custody
• Conduct comprehensive health assessments, including history taking, physical assessment, and risk screening
• Plan, implement, and evaluate patient-specific nursing care plans in collaboration with the inter-professional team
• Provide emergency care, acute care, crisis intervention, health teaching, and counselling
• Administer medications and treatments in accordance with CNO standards and institutional policies
• Monitor and evaluate responses to treatments and adjust interventions in collaboration with the health care team
• Contribute to case management and multidisciplinary team conferences, sharing clinical observations and recommendations
• Assist with health care reintegration planning and discharge coordination to support continuity of care
• Develop and deliver health promotion and wellness education programs tailored to youth (e.g., sexual health, substance use, mental health, chronic disease management)
• Act as a resource to youth, staff, and external partners by sharing nursing knowledge and best practices
• Document assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately and in a timely manner in health records
• Practice in accordance with CNO practice standards, professional guidelines, relevant legislation, and ministry policies

Nursing Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to provide full-scope nursing care to patients with complex health needs and unpredictable outcomes
• Skill in collecting, interpreting, and evaluating health information to complete comprehensive assessments
• Ability to develop evidence-informed treatment and care plans and evaluate their effectiveness
• Competence in addressing emergency situations and implementing appropriate therapeutic interventions
• Knowledge of professional standards, best practice guidelines, and nursing theories and practices
• Understanding of relevant legislation (e.g., Regulated Health Professions Act, Health Care Consent Act, privacy/confidentiality legislation) and ability to apply this knowledge to practice

Critical Thinking, Analytical, and Organizational Skills

• Ability to provide emergency care, acute care, crisis intervention, health teaching, and counselling to a population with both routine and complex needs
• Strong clinical judgement to prioritize care, recognize deterioration, and act promptly
• Capacity to manage multiple clinical priorities in a secure, fast-paced environment
• Effective time management and organizational skills to balance documentation, direct care, and collaboration

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• Ability to work effectively and respectfully with youth, colleagues, and other stakeholders in a secure environment
• Skill in advocating on behalf of patients for appropriate treatments and services
• Ability to explain medications, treatments, and possible side effects in an age-appropriate and understandable way
• Capacity to provide health education that supports treatment goals and encourages self-management where appropriate
• Strong teamwork skills, using an inter-professional approach to care for a diverse youth population
• Clear, professional written and verbal communication

Work Conditions

• Secure youth justice facility environment with established security protocols
• Rotating shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and statutory holidays
• Exposure to situations requiring de-escalation, crisis intervention, and trauma-informed approaches
