The General Duty Staff Nurse is responsible for providing holistic nursing care to oncology patients throughout their cancer care experience. This includes patient assessment, intervention, symptom management, treatment coordination and administration, education, counseling, support, and follow-up, all in accordance with established policies and standards of care. This role is essential in delivering compassionate, patient-centered care in a dynamic oncology setting.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide direct patient care by assessing patient conditions, reviewing patient and family history, and developing and implementing individualized nursing care plans.
  • Administer prescribed oncology treatments, including chemotherapy, blood products, injections, and IV fluids, while monitoring patient responses and managing side effects.
  • Collaborate with patients, families, and multidisciplinary team members to develop and modify treatment plans as patients progress through care stages.
  • Maintain accurate patient records, documenting assessments, communications, symptom management, patient education, and care evaluations.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge patients following BC Cancer policies and protocols.
  • Assist patients in understanding their care plans and refer them to additional healthcare professionals and community resources as needed.
  • Ensure a safe environment for patients, families, and staff by adhering to emergency procedures, safety policies, and best practices.

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
  • CPR (Level C) certification.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • New graduates (within the last 18 months) who have not completed a new grad program with another health authority are encouraged to apply through PHSA’s new grad program.
