Education Requirements

• College, CEGEP, or other non-university certificate or diploma from program of 1 year to 2 years
• Health Care Aide Certificate required
• Personal Support Worker Certificate accepted
• Nursing Aide Certificate recognized
• Resident Care Aide certification acceptable
• Equivalent professional experience will be considered
• International healthcare credentials evaluated individually

Key Responsibilities

Comprehensive Personal and Bedside Care:
• Provide dignified, compassionate personal care to residents with respect and empathy
• Assist residents with bathing and all aspects of personal hygiene
• Administer bedside and personal care according to individual care plans
• Bathe, dress, and groom residents maintaining their dignity and preferences
• Supply and empty bed pans professionally and discreetly
• Weigh, lift, turn, and position residents safely using proper techniques and equipment
• Ensure resident comfort throughout all care activities
• Support residents’ independence while ensuring safety and well-being
• Provide respectful, person-centered care at all times

Health Monitoring and Clinical Support:
• Take and accurately record residents’ blood pressure, temperature, and pulse
• Monitor vital signs according to care protocols
• Collect specimens for laboratory testing as directed by nursing staff
• Observe residents for changes in health status or signs of distress
• Report concerns, abnormalities, or health changes to nurses immediately
• Follow care plans and clinical protocols precisely
• Administer first aid in emergency situations
• Maintain accurate, detailed resident care documentation
• Participate in care conferences and assessments

Nutrition and Meal Support:
• Serve meal trays to residents in timely, respectful manner
• Feed or assist residents with eating and drinking
• Monitor and document food and fluid intake accurately
• Accommodate therapeutic diets and special dietary requirements
• Encourage adequate nutrition and hydration
• Report changes in appetite, eating patterns, or swallowing difficulties
• Support residents during mealtimes with patience and encouragement
• Ensure residents’ dining experience is pleasant and dignified

Mobility and Safe Resident Transfer:
• Transport residents in wheelchairs or stretchers safely
• Assist with resident transfers using proper body mechanics and equipment
• Support residents with walking using mobility aids appropriately
• Position residents for optimal comfort, safety, and circulation
• Use mechanical lifts and transfer devices correctly and safely
• Ensure resident safety during all mobility and transfer activities
• Prevent falls and injuries through vigilant monitoring

Environmental Care and Housekeeping:
• Make beds and maintain residents’ rooms in clean, organized, homelike condition
• Perform light housekeeping and cleaning duties in resident areas
• Launder clothing and household linens as required
• Ensure resident environments are safe, comfortable, and hazard-free
• Organize personal belongings for easy resident accessibility
• Maintain infection prevention and control standards consistently
• Keep resident living spaces pleasant, clean, and welcoming
• Create homelike atmosphere supporting resident well-being

Social, Recreational, and Emotional Support:
• Accompany residents on outdoor recreational activities
• Provide companionship and meaningful social interaction
• Engage residents in conversations and activities
• Facilitate participation in recreation and activity programs
• Support resident dignity, autonomy, and quality of life
• Encourage social connections among residents
• Assist with recreational, leisure, and spiritual activities
• Tend to residents’ emotional well-being with empathy and understanding
• Create positive, engaging atmosphere

Additional Care Responsibilities:
• Perform other duties related to resident care and comfort as assigned
• Assist with rehabilitation exercises under supervision
• Support residents with cognitive impairments using person-centered approaches
• Provide compassionate end-of-life care and family support
• Assist nursing staff with medical procedures when needed
• Maintain resident confidentiality and privacy always
• Support family members with information and emotional support
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives
