The Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) is seeking dedicated and skilled individuals to join our team as Casual Truck Drivers in the Recycling & Waste Management Division of the Operations Department. Reporting to the Manager of Solid Waste Operations and under the supervision of Recycling Leader V, the Truck Driver ensures the smooth operation of CVRD Recycling Facilities by efficiently collecting and hauling residential and commercial waste using tandem axle collection trucks and other equipment.

General Responsibilities

Operate tandem axle collection trucks for waste collection and hauling.
Support facility operations as required by using additional equipment.
Ensure adherence to safety and operational protocols at all times.

Qualifications

• Education: Secondary School graduation or equivalent.

Experience:

• Curbside Truck Driving: Two (2) years of experience in a related field using a Class 3 Driver’s License, or six (6) months of driving experience for CVRD with a Class 3 Driver’s License.
• Roll-Off Truck Driving or Relief Curbside Driving: Two (2) years of related experience is considered an asset.
• Customer Relations: Strong experience in managing customer interactions and resolving conflicts.

Licenses & Certifications:

• Valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement.
• Level 1 First Aid with CPR certification.
• Front-End Loader Operator Safety Training certificate – employer-provided, considered an asset.
• Excavator Operator Safety Training certificate – employer-provided, considered an asset.

Work Environment
As a casual, on-call position:

• Work schedules are based on operational needs, with no guaranteed hours.
• The successful candidate must be available for a minimum of two days per week.
• The role involves outdoor work in various weather conditions, requiring physical stamina and resilience.

• Expertise in operating heavy trucks and related equipment.
• Understanding of recycling and waste management practices.
• Ability to handle physically demanding tasks and work under minimal supervision.
• Conflict resolution and customer service skills.

Education and Certification

• Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.
• Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement.
• Certifications in equipment operation (e.g., Front-End Loader and Excavator Safety Training) are advantageous.

Salary & Benefits

• Unionized position (USW Local 1-1937) with a wage rate in two steps: $32.99-$35.01 per hour (2023 rates).
• Additional 14% pay in lieu of vacation, benefits, and statutory holidays.
• Sponsorship is available for eligible candidates.
