Mdewgaan Lodge (mi-day-gaan / medicine lodge) serves Indigenous women with young children who are struggling with addiction issues and mental health challenges related to complex trauma and poverty, and who are either homeless, precariously housed, or at risk of homelessness.

The program stems the flow of children into child welfare, breaking down historical cycles, and addressing the overrepresentation of Indigenous children in the child welfare system.

Our services are trauma-informed and holistic, utilizing Traditional Healing, Traditional Counselling, and Landbased Cultural Programming combined with mainstream clinical interventions.

Primary Responsibilities :

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Mdewgaan Lodge, the Overnight Support Worker is responsible for :

  • Assisting the residents with day-to-day functioning and routines of the household.
  • Overseeing the safety and security of the house by ensuring that the residents adhere to the house rules and expectations.
  • Providing support and information / resources to the residents as needed.
  • Meeting with the Mdewgaan Lodge Team to debrief and pass on all pertinent information, both written and verbal, as to what transpired during the shift.
  • Maintaining all files and documentation, as per NCFST policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Working co-operatively with all NCFST departments to ensure the quality care of the residents.
  • Assisting with meal planning and preparation.
  • Communicating with all residents and colleagues in a respectful manner.
  • Adhering to NCFST and facility specific protocols and procedures, including maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Complying with provincial and occupational health and safety legislation.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
  • Must remain awake and on-site for the duration of your shift.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS :

  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultures and the issues facing young Indigenous women and children.
  • A post-secondary diploma in the social service field from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of one (1) year direct experience in the social work field (preferably in a transitional / group home environment).
  • Alternatively, a combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • A willingness to obtain and pass a Vulnerable Sector Screening Records Check.
  • Knowledge of the resources available for Indigenous peoples with respect to issues such as homelessness, addictions and mental health.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the workplace health and safety practices and understanding of an employee’s responsibility under current legislation;
  • Have a current CPR and First Aid certification or be willing to complete prior to commencement of employment.
  • NCFST requires all employees, contractors, students, and volunteers to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, absent of a valid medical exemption or other reasonable consideration pursuant to the Human Rights
  • Code of Ontario.
