Job Overview
Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre is seeking dedicated Housekeeping Aides to join our environmental services team. In this vital role, you will help protect patients, visitors, and staff by maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary hospital environment. You will work throughout patient rooms, clinical areas, and public spaces, following strict infection control protocols and cleaning standards. Languages: English

Education

  • Secondary (high) school graduation certificate, or
  • Equivalent education and/or experience

Experience

  • 1 year to less than 2 years of experience in housekeeping, environmental services, or janitorial work
  • Previous experience in a hospital, medical facility, long-term care, or other healthcare environment is a strong asset

Work Site Environment

  • Non-smoking facility
  • Hospital/medical facility or clinic environment
  • Work in patient rooms, operating rooms, clinical departments, offices, and public areas

Work Setting

  • Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre, a healthcare facility serving Sioux Lookout and surrounding communities
  • Team-based environment with daily interaction with clinical and non-clinical staff
  • Unionized setting where wages, premiums, and certain benefits are as per the collective agreement

Key Responsibilities (Tasks)

  • Sweep, mop, wash, and polish floors in patient rooms, corridors, nursing stations, and other hospital areas according to established procedures
  • Vacuum carpeting, area rugs, draperies, and upholstered furniture in patient and public areas
  • Make beds and change sheets in patient rooms following infection control and bed-making protocols
  • Distribute clean towels, linens, and toiletries to patient rooms and designated supply areas
  • Clean, disinfect, and sanitize operating rooms and other high-risk clinical areas as assigned, following strict protocols and checklists
  • Clean and disinfect elevators, handrails, door handles, and other high-touch surfaces frequently throughout the shift
  • Wash windows, walls, ceilings, and glass surfaces in designated areas as required
  • Ensure infection control practices are followed at all times, including proper use of disinfectants, PPE, and waste segregation
  • Handle waste and soiled linen in accordance with facility guidelines and infection prevention standards
  • Refill and maintain supplies (soap, sanitizer, paper products, etc.) in restrooms and public areas
  • Report maintenance issues (e.g., damaged fixtures, leaks, safety hazards) to the appropriate department
  • Follow daily cleaning schedules, assignments, and priorities as directed by supervisors
  • Use and maintain cleaning equipment (mops, auto-scrubbers, vacuums, carts) safely and correctly
  • Maintain accurate documentation as required for specialized cleaning tasks or infection control logs
  • Provide helpful, courteous assistance to patients, visitors, and staff within the boundaries of the role

Credentials (Certificates, Licences, Memberships, Courses)

  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Certificate required or willingness to obtain shortly after hire
  • Any additional infection control or environmental services training is an asset

Experience and Specialization

  • Specialization or experience:
    • Specialized environmental skills and knowledge in healthcare, such as isolation room cleaning, terminal cleaning, and correct disinfectant use

Transportation/Travel Information

  • Valid driver’s licence required
  • Ability to travel to and from the facility reliably for rotating shifts (local transportation arrangements are the responsibility of the employee)

Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities

  • Ability to work independently after training, while also contributing to a team environment
  • Fast-paced environment with shifting priorities based on patient and clinical needs
  • Work under pressure to complete cleaning tasks within set time frames, including quick turnarounds for patient rooms
  • Physically demanding role with frequent lifting, pushing, and pulling of equipment and supply carts (up to 13.5 kg / 30 lbs)
  • Standing and walking for extended periods over the course of a shift
  • Bending, crouching, reaching, and stretching throughout the day while cleaning various surfaces and fixtures
  • Continuous need for attention to detail to meet cleanliness and infection control standards

Own Tools/Equipment

  • Uniform required (typically provided or specified by the employer as per policy)
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) provided by employer as per occupational health and safety requirements
