Job Overview
A private household in Scarborough is seeking a patient, caring, and responsible Home Support Worker to provide daily in-home assistance to an elderly client. You will help with personal care, basic medical support (as directed), meal preparation, light housekeeping, and companionship, enabling the client to live safely and comfortably at home. This is a long-term, full-time position suited to someone who genuinely enjoys helping seniors, communicates well, and is looking to grow a professional caregiving career in Canada.

Education
- Secondary (high) school graduation certificate, or
- Equivalent education and/or experience in a related field
Experience
- 1 year to less than 2 years of recent experience as a home support worker, personal support worker, caregiver, nursing aide, or in a similar role
- Experience working with elderly clients in a home or community setting is an asset
Work Site Environment
- Non-smoking home
Work Setting
- Employer’s private home in Scarborough, ON
- One-on-one support for an elderly client in a residential neighbourhood
- Live-out role (you will not be required to live in the home; reliable daily commuting is required)
Key Responsibilities (Tasks)
- Administer bedside and personal care to the client, including assistance with mobility, positioning, and comfort measures
- Administer medications as directed by the employer and in line with written instructions (e.g., oral medications, reminders, simple topical applications)
- Assist client with bathing, showering, grooming, dressing, and other aspects of personal hygiene, promoting dignity and independence as much as possible
- Assist in regular exercise and mobility activities, such as supervised walks and simple stretching, following care plans or healthcare provider recommendations
- Provide personal care according to established routines and any specific instructions from healthcare professionals
- Prepare and serve nutritious meals and snacks based on dietary needs, preferences, and any medical restrictions
- Shop for food and household supplies as requested by the employer, following lists and agreed budgets
- Launder clothing and household linens; dry, fold, and store items neatly
- Mend clothing and linens as needed (buttons, small tears, simple repairs)
- Perform light housekeeping and cleaning duties related to the client’s care and shared areas, such as tidying rooms, washing dishes, wiping surfaces, and maintaining cleanliness
- Provide companionship and emotional support through conversation, reading, games, or shared activities, helping reduce isolation and support mental well-being
- Observe and report any changes in the client’s physical or emotional condition (e.g., changes in appetite, mobility, mood) to the employer promptly
- Maintain a safe and healthy environment in the home by identifying and reducing hazards (e.g., clear walkways, dry floors, appropriate lighting)
- Keep simple records of care provided, meals, activities, and any notable changes or concerns
- Follow any care plans and instructions provided by family members or healthcare professionals involved in the client’s care
Credentials (Certificates, Licences, Memberships, Courses)
- CPR Certificate
- First Aid Certificate
- Other relevant caregiving or personal support certificates are considered assets
Experience and Specialization – Target Audience
- Elderly clients (seniors requiring assistance with daily living and personal care)
Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities
- Combination of sitting, standing, and walking throughout the shift while assisting the client
- Frequent bending, crouching, and light lifting for tasks such as laundry, housekeeping, and assisting with mobility
- Weight handling up to 23 kg (50 lbs), including supporting the client with transfers or repositioning (proper body mechanics and safe lifting techniques required)
- Periods of working under time constraints when multiple tasks must be managed (meals, medications, appointments)
- Emotional demands associated with supporting an elderly client who may have physical or cognitive limitations

- Good judgment and decision-making skills, especially in responding to minor emergencies or changes in condition
- Effective communication skills; able to listen carefully to instructions and communicate clearly with the client and family
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision once routines are established
- Calm, gentle, and respectful manner in all interactions
Additional Assets (Not Required but Preferred)
- Previous experience in home care, long-term care, or community support services
- Knowledge of basic nutrition and meal planning for seniors
- Familiarity with mobility aids (e.g., walker, cane, wheelchair) and safe transfer techniques
