Job Overview
Bar JB Ranch Ltd. is seeking an experienced and motivated Herd Attendant to join our beef cattle operation near Carnduff, Saskatchewan. This role combines hands-on daily livestock care with foreman/woman responsibilities in animal husbandry, breeding programs, and record-keeping. You will work closely with ownership and ranch management to monitor herd health, support calving and weaning, manage breeding and genetics programs, and maintain accurate performance records. This position is ideal for someone with formal agricultural training and solid cattle experience who wants to take on more leadership in a progressive beef ranch environment, with long-term stability and on-site accommodation in a rural setting.

Languages: English

Education

• College, CEGEP or other non-university certificate or diploma from a program of 1 to 2 years (preferably in Animal Science, Agriculture, Ranch Management, or a related field)

Experience

• 2 years to less than 3 years of relevant experience working with beef cattle or in a similar livestock role
• Experience in cow-calf, feedlot, or mixed livestock operations is a strong asset
• Experience with breeding programs, calving, herd health, and basic record-keeping is preferred

Work Site Environment

• Beef cattle ranching and farming, including feedlots
• Hay farming and livestock combination farming
• Outdoor work in all weather conditions (heat, cold, wind, snow, rain)
• Direct, daily work around livestock
• Dusty, noisy, and wet/damp conditions at times typical of active ranch operations

Work Setting

• Rural area near Carnduff, Saskatchewan
• On-site staff accommodation available (private or shared, details to be confirmed with employer)
• Work closely with owners, ranch managers, and other ranch staff
• Combination of hands-on livestock work, equipment operation, and some supervisory/foreman-type duties

Key Responsibilities (Tasks)

• Handle beef cattle safely and calmly on a daily basis, including moving, sorting, and restraining animals as required
• Diagnose livestock health issues at an early stage by observing behaviour, appearance, feed intake, and manure, and report findings to management or veterinary services
• Monitor animal health and welfare on an ongoing basis; identify signs of illness, injury, lameness, or distress
• Treat livestock health issues as directed, including administering medications, vaccines, and other treatments under veterinary and ranch protocols
• Monitor the calving process, including close observation of cows and heifers, assisting with difficult births as directed, and caring for newborn calves
• Prepare clean, dry, and safe calving areas to reduce disease risk and support calf survival
• Perform livestock feeding, including preparing and delivering feed rations using equipment such as tractors, loaders, and feed wagons
• Feed and tend animals according to established nutrition and feeding programs, adjusting as seasons and conditions change
• Carry out pasture or pen breeding programs, including heat detection, bull management, synchronization protocols (as applicable), and pregnancy checking coordination
• Wean calves according to ranch protocols, ensuring stress is minimized and health is monitored closely during transition periods
• Mark livestock as proof of ownership (e.g., ear tags, tattoos, brands) following ranch and regulatory standards
• Maintain livestock performance records, including birth weights, weaning weights, treatments, breeding records, and culling information
• Maintain quality control and production records for herd performance, feed usage, and other key indicators
• Supervise and oversee breeding and other livestock-related programs, including coordinating schedules, assisting with planning, and providing guidance to general ranch hands as needed
• Detect disease and health problems in livestock (and, where applicable, in any crops or poultry on the property) and report concerns promptly
• Clean stables, barns, barnyards, and pens, ensuring housing and working areas meet cleanliness and safety standards
• Perform general ranch duties such as fencing repairs, pen and water system maintenance, pasture checks, and yard upkeep
• Organize daily and weekly tasks to accomplish work efficiently and meet herd and production timelines

Experience and Specialization

• Equipment and Machinery Experience:
  • Harvesters (for hay and feed production)
  • Tractor (feeding, hauling, field work)
  • Farm truck (for transport of feed, equipment, and livestock as allowed)
  • Loader (e.g., front-end loader for feed, manure, and materials handling)
  • Skidsteer (pen cleaning, feeding, yard maintenance)
• Area of Specialization:
  • Agricultural livestock service
  • Cattle breeding and reproduction management
  • Cattle genomics and performance-based selection (as applicable)
  • Beef cattle production (cow-calf, backgrounding, or feedlot components)

Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities

• Ability to work independently once routines and responsibilities are understood
• Work under pressure during busy or critical periods (calving, weaning, severe weather events, animal health incidents)
• Physically demanding role requiring good strength, stamina, and overall fitness
• Repetitive tasks including feeding, bedding, lifting, shovelling, and equipment operation
• Combination of sitting (machinery operation), standing, and walking throughout large outdoor areas
• Standing for extended periods while monitoring animals, working in pens, or operating equipment
• Frequent bending, crouching, kneeling, and climbing (into equipment, over fences, on uneven terrain)
• Working in close proximity to large animals, with the need for constant awareness of safety and animal behaviour
