Job Overview
Luxuria Homes, a reputable residential builder in Calgary, is seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Excavator Operator to support our construction and site development projects. You will operate heavy excavation equipment on residential and small commercial sites, performing digging, trenching, grading, and backfilling to support foundations, utilities, and landscaping. This role is ideal for an operator who wants stable, full-time work with a respected builder, competitive pay, and the opportunity to grow within Calgary’s busy construction market. Candidates with solid equipment operating skills and a strong safety mindset are encouraged to apply, including those willing to relocate (with employer-covered relocation costs).

Languages: English

Education

  • Secondary (high) school graduation certificate, or
  • Equivalent combination of education and on-the-job experience

Experience

  • Experience an asset (previous work as an excavator operator, heavy equipment operator, or related role is preferred)
  • Employer will provide site-specific training and orientation for the right candidate who demonstrates strong operating aptitude and safety awareness

Work Setting

  • Construction sites in Calgary, AB and surrounding area
  • Primarily residential construction (foundations, basements, servicing, grading, and landscaping) with potential small commercial work
  • Outdoor work in varying weather conditions and on different soil and site conditions
  • Work under the direction of site supervisors, foremen, and project managers

Key Responsibilities (Tasks)

  • Operate heavy equipment (primarily excavators) to excavate, trench, dig, grade, backfill, and move earth, rock, and other materials according to site plans and instructions
  • Conduct pre-operational checks on equipment, including fluid levels, filters, belts, tires/tracks, hydraulic lines, lights, and safety devices, to ensure equipment is safe and ready for use
  • Clean and lubricate equipment regularly and refill equipment tanks (fuel, lubricants, fluids) as required
  • Secure special attachments to equipment (e.g., different buckets, thumbs, breakers, compaction wheels) and ensure they are installed and used correctly
  • Perform minor repairs and adjustments to equipment as needed (e.g., tightening bolts, replacing teeth, addressing simple mechanical issues) and report major issues promptly to maintenance or supervisors
  • Follow site plans, grade stakes, and instructions from supervisors to achieve accurate depths, slopes, and grades
  • Work carefully around underground utilities, foundations, and existing structures, following all safety and ground disturbance procedures
  • Load trucks with excavated materials safely and efficiently, coordinating with truck drivers and other operators
  • Assist with material placement (gravel, backfill, topsoil) to support foundation construction, service installation, and final grading
  • Maintain clear communication with site supervisors, spotters, and other workers via hand signals, radios, or verbal instructions
  • Participate in daily toolbox talks and safety meetings; follow all company and legislative safety rules and procedures
  • Help maintain tidy, organized work areas by positioning equipment and materials safely and efficiently
  • Assist with general labour or site tasks as needed when equipment is not in use (e.g., basic site clean-up, material handling, supporting other trades)

  • Heavy Equipment Operator or Excavator Operator certificate or recognized training is an asset
  • Valid safety certifications such as:
    • Ground Disturbance
    • CSTS or equivalent construction safety training
    • First Aid/CPR (asset)
  • Valid driver’s licence and reliable transportation to job sites (Calgary-based) are assets

Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities

  • Physically demanding role requiring good stamina and overall fitness
  • Extended periods of sitting in the operator’s cab, combined with climbing in and out of equipment multiple times per shift
  • Handling heavy loads and equipment components when attaching buckets or performing minor repairs
  • Working outdoors in all weather conditions typical of Calgary (heat, cold, wind, rain, snow)
  • Exposure to noise, dust, vibrations, and moving construction equipment
  • Need for excellent attention to detail to follow grade requirements, avoid obstacles, and prevent damage to utilities and structures
  • Standing, walking, bending, crouching, and kneeling when inspecting equipment, assisting with labour tasks, or performing minor maintenance
  • Work under pressure at times to meet project deadlines and schedule commitments
