Job Overview
G & C Hughes Enterprises Limited is seeking hardworking General Farm Workers to join its harvesting team in New Ross, Nova Scotia. This is a hands-on, seasonal role on a diversified crop operation with a strong focus on Christmas trees and other field crops. You will spend your days working outdoors in all weather conditions, planting, shearing, fertilizing, and harvesting trees and other crops while using a mix of hand tools and machinery. This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy physical work, being outside, and learning practical farm skills in a supportive, team-focused environment. Candidates from other provinces and countries who are willing to relocate are welcome to apply, with LMIA sponsorship available for qualified workers.

- Experience is an asset (farm work, landscaping, forestry, or other physical labour), but not mandatory

- Other miscellaneous crop farming with a strong emphasis on Christmas trees and related crops
- Outdoors in all weather conditions (sun, rain, wind, cold, heat)
- Varied terrain including fields, forested areas, and tree plantations

Key Responsibilities (Tasks)
- Apply fertilizers to trees and crops as directed, following safety and application guidelines
- Shear Christmas trees using hand tools to shape and prepare them for market
- Shear and shape trees and plants with knives and other tools to improve quality and appearance
- Perform weeding in tree rows and crop fields using hand tools or manual methods
- Fertilize and spray crops according to instructions, following safe handling procedures for fertilizers and crop protection products
- Operate and maintain farm machinery and equipment (e.g., tractors, sprayers, mowers, harvest tools) after proper training
- Plant tree seedlings and ensure they are placed and spaced correctly for optimal growth
- Help with general field and yard maintenance such as clearing brush, picking stones, and tidying work areas
- Assist with harvest, bundling, sorting, and loading of trees and other crops for shipment
- Follow all farm safety rules and procedures to protect yourself, co-workers, and equipment
Additional Information – Security and Safety
- Driving record check (abstract) may be required if you will operate farm vehicles on public roads
- Compliance with all safety protocols on machinery and in fields is mandatory
Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities
- Fast-paced environment during peak planting and harvest periods
- Repetitive tasks such as cutting, shearing, weeding, and planting
- Handling heavy loads including trees, tools, fertilizer bags, and equipment components
- Physically demanding work requiring stamina and strength
- Frequent bending, crouching, and kneeling in fields and among trees
- Weight handling up to 23 kg (50 lbs) on a regular basis
- Combination of walking, standing, and working on uneven ground throughout the day
