Job Overview
YARROW LIMITED PARTNERSHIP is seeking caring, dedicated Health Care Aides to join our team at a nursing home/home for the aged in the Duncan area of British Columbia. As a Health Care Aide, you will provide direct, hands-on support to seniors, helping them with daily living, comfort, and safety in a respectful and dignified way. Working in a remote/rural setting, you will be part of a close-knit healthcare team that values compassion, professionalism, and person-centred care. Languages: English

Education

  • College, CEGEP or other non-university certificate or diploma from a Health Care Aide or equivalent program of 3 months to less than 1 year

Experience

  • Experience is an asset (e.g., Health Care Aide, Care Attendant, Personal Support Worker, Nursing Assistant, or similar)
  • New graduates with the required certificate are welcome; orientation and on-the-job support will be provided

Work Setting

  • Nursing home/home for the aged providing long-term care to seniors
  • Remote / rural area in and around Duncan, BC (willingness to relocate required)
  • 24/7 facility with rotating shifts and multidisciplinary healthcare team

Key Responsibilities (Tasks)

  • Supply and empty bedpans and assist residents with toileting and elimination needs in a dignified, hygienic manner
  • Take and record patients’ vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration, as directed by nursing staff
  • Serve meal trays and feed patients who require assistance, ensuring safety (e.g., proper positioning, awareness of swallowing issues)
  • Assist with hydration and snacks, encouraging adequate fluid and food intake as per care plans
  • Weigh, lift, turn, and position patients using proper body mechanics and transfer techniques, often with the aid of mechanical lifts or assistive devices
  • Make beds (occupied and unoccupied) and maintain patients’ rooms in a clean, tidy, and safe condition
  • Maintain inventory of supplies on units (e.g., linens, incontinence products, basic care supplies) and report shortages
  • Transport patients in wheelchairs or on stretchers within the facility, ensuring safety and comfort during transfers
  • Deliver messages, reports, requisitions, and specimens between departments as required, following facility protocols
  • Provide basic personal care such as bathing, grooming, dressing, oral hygiene, and hair care in accordance with care plans and resident preferences
  • Assist residents with mobility, including walking, range-of-motion exercises, and use of mobility aids under direction from nursing/physiotherapy
  • Observe and report changes in residents’ physical or emotional condition (e.g., pain, confusion, behaviour changes, skin integrity) to nursing staff promptly
  • Administer first aid in emergency situations within the scope of training until professional help arrives, following facility emergency protocols
  • Support residents’ emotional well-being through respectful communication, reassurance, and companionship
  • Follow established infection prevention and control practices, including hand hygiene, PPE use, and proper handling of soiled materials
  • Document care provided and observations as required by facility policies (e.g., flow sheets, electronic records)

Credentials (Certificates, Licences, Memberships, Courses)

  • Health Care Aide Certificate (or equivalent recognized in British Columbia) required
  • CPR and First Aid certification are assets
  • Any additional geriatric care or dementia care training is considered an advantage

  • Combination of sitting, standing, and walking throughout long shifts
  • Bending, crouching, and kneeling while assisting residents and performing tasks
  • Standing and walking for extended periods on unit floors
  • Repetitive tasks (e.g., personal care, bed making, documentation)
  • Work under pressure at times, particularly during busy periods, emergencies, or staffing shortages
  • Need for high attention to detail when following care plans and recording information
  • Shift work including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call as required
