Job Overview
A well-established hog and pig farming operation in Zurich, Ontario is seeking an experienced and hands-on Farm Foreman/Farm Forewoman to oversee day-to-day livestock operations. This is an excellent opportunity for a livestock professional with strong swine experience who is ready to take on leadership responsibilities, supervise staff, and ensure high standards of animal health, welfare, and productivity. You will coordinate breeding and farrowing programs, monitor animal performance, maintain biosecurity and safety procedures, and work directly with both animals and equipment. Language Requirements

• English required for communication with owners, staff, veterinarians, and service providers

Education Requirements

• College/CEGEP diploma in agriculture, animal science, agribusiness, or a related field, or
• Equivalent experience in livestock farming with demonstrated knowledge of swine production

Experience Requirements

• 3 years to less than 5 years of experience in hog or other livestock farming
• Direct experience with swine (breeding, farrowing, finishing) strongly preferred
• Previous supervisory or lead-hand experience on a farm is a strong asset
• Experience with feeding and watering systems and barn technology is beneficial

Work Site Environment

• Hog and pig farming operation (swine)
• Indoors in barns and outdoors around farm infrastructure
• Exposure to livestock odours, noise, and dust
• Work in all seasons and varied temperature conditions within barns

Key Responsibilities (Tasks)

Animal Health and Welfare
• Monitor animal health daily, identifying signs of illness, injury, stress, or abnormal behaviour
• Treat livestock health issues as per protocols and in coordination with veterinarians
• Supervise and oversee breeding programs, farrowing, and other livestock-related programs
• Carry out pasture or pen breeding programs and manage boar and sow performance
• Ensure proper handling and low-stress movement of pigs at all stages

Production Management and Records
• Maintain livestock performance records, including growth rates, feed conversion, health treatments, and mortality
• Maintain quality control and production records in line with farm standards and regulatory requirements
• Maintain detailed work records and logs for staff activities, feeding schedules, and barn operations
• Use records to help identify trends and areas for improvement in productivity and animal health

Biosecurity and Farm Safety
• Ensure farm safety and biosecurity procedures are followed consistently by all staff and visitors
• Assist in the development and refinement of safety and biosecurity protocols
• Monitor compliance with hygiene protocols (footbaths, clothing changes, restricted access areas)
• Promote a strong safety culture, including proper use of equipment and safe animal handling

Equipment and Facility Management
• Operate and maintain farm machinery and equipment related to swine operations
• Oversee and troubleshoot feeding and watering systems to ensure consistent delivery
• Coordinate basic maintenance and repairs of barns, pens, and equipment, or report issues to management
• Assist with ventilation checks, temperature control, and environmental comfort for animals

General Farm Duties and Supervision
• Perform general farm duties, including cleaning pens, moving animals, assisting with loading/unloading, and barn sanitation
• Supervise and oversee the work of farm staff (3–4 people), assigning daily tasks and monitoring performance
• Provide training, guidance, and ongoing support to staff on proper animal handling, hygiene, and safety practices
• Communicate regularly with farm owners/managers about herd status, production, staffing, and operational issues

Experience and Specialization

• Equipment and machinery experience:
• Feeding and watering system operation and basic troubleshooting
• Area of specialization:
• Swine
• Agricultural livestock service
• Dairy or other livestock experience is an asset but swine is primary

Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities

• Work under pressure during peak periods (e.g., farrowing, shipping, emergencies)
• Physically demanding tasks including lifting, pushing, pulling, and working in confined spaces
• High attention to detail required for monitoring animals, records, and safety procedures
• Combination of sitting (for records and planning), standing, and walking throughout barns and farmyard
• Regular bending, crouching, and kneeling to check animals, treat issues, and perform cleaning tasks
