Job Title: Farm Labourer (Temporary, Part-Time)

The Edmonton Valley Zoo is seeking dedicated Farm Labourers (Labourer II) to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals who enjoy working outdoors and contributing to the care of animals and their environment. You will assist in facility maintenance, landscaping, animal waste management, and supporting the Animal Care Team in daily operations. Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain zoo grounds, including landscaping, turf maintenance, fencing repairs, and exhibit upkeep.
  • Operate snow removal and maintenance equipment, including plows, utility vehicles, sweepers, snow blowers, and lawn mowers.
  • Assist in mechanical ride maintenance for the 1959 Conservation Carousel and mini train.
  • Perform cleaning tasks, including washroom maintenance, sweeping, mopping, and facility waste removal.
  • Support the Animal Care Team by delivering and removing animal supplies and materials to enclosures.
  • Handle animal waste management and ensure sanitary conditions in enclosures.
  • Assist with special events and facility rental setup.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education: Minimum completion of Grade 10.
  • Experience: At least 1 year of facility maintenance experience, including operating hand and power tools (e.g., grounds master, table saw, skid steer, chainsaw).
  • Assets (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Certification in heavy equipment operation (e.g., Skid Steer, Backhoe).
  • Experience working around zoo or farm animals and knowledge of animal handling safety.

Skills Required for Success

  • Knowledge of standard tools, materials, and equipment used in zoo/farm facility maintenance.
  • Ability to work near animals, following safety precautions.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills to interact with visitors professionally.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including repetitive manual labor, heavy lifting, and working in various weather conditions.
  • Strong organization, time management, and prioritization skills.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, reconciliation, and inclusion.

Conditions of Employment

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a City Driver’s Permit.
  • Satisfactory Police Information Check, including Vulnerable Sector screening.
  • Applicants may be tested on job-related skills.

Work Environment

  • Outdoor work in all weather conditions, including extreme cold and heat.
  • Physically demanding tasks such as lifting, bending, and using hand tools for long periods.
  • Flexible work schedule, including weekends, early mornings, evenings, and holidays.
