Job Overview
Compass Group Canada, a leading provider of food and support services, is seeking a motivated and organized Food Service Supervisor to oversee day-to-day food operations at one of its Thunder Bay locations. You will supervise a team of frontline staff, ensuring high standards of food quality, safety, cleanliness, and customer service are consistently met. This role is ideal for a hands-on leader with restaurant or institutional food service experience who wants to take the next step into supervision with a global company that offers structure, training, and room to grow.

Languages: English

Education

  • College, CEGEP, or other non-university certificate or diploma from a program of 3 months to less than 1 year in Restaurant/Food Services Management or a related field, or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

Experience

  • 1 year to less than 2 years of experience in food service, restaurant, cafeteria, or institutional dining
  • Previous experience in a lead hand, shift supervisor, or key-holder role is a strong asset

Work Setting

  • Food service operations (e.g., cafeteria, quick-service outlet, or institutional dining facility) managed by Compass Group Canada in Thunder Bay
  • Fast-paced environment with fluctuating rush periods (e.g., meal times, events)
  • Team-based setting with close collaboration with other supervisors, managers, and front-line staff

Key Responsibilities (Tasks)

  • Establish and implement methods to meet daily and weekly work schedules, ensuring adequate staffing and smooth service during peak times
  • Supervise and co-ordinate the activities of staff who prepare, portion, and serve food and beverages
  • Train new and existing staff in job duties, cash handling (if applicable), customer service, sanitation standards, and safety procedures
  • Estimate ingredients, food items, and supplies required for meal preparation based on forecasts, menu cycles, and past usage
  • Ensure that all food and service meet quality control standards, including taste, temperature, portion size, and presentation
  • Monitor compliance with food safety regulations and internal policies (e.g., Safe Food Handling, temperature logs, storage procedures)
  • Address customers’ complaints or concerns promptly and professionally, resolving issues and escalating to management when necessary
  • Maintain accurate records of stock levels, equipment repairs, sales, and wastage as required by company procedures
  • Assist with ordering and receiving deliveries; verify quantities and quality of products and ensure proper storage
  • Prepare and submit daily, weekly, or monthly reports to management as requested (e.g., sales summaries, inventory reports, labour reports)
  • Establish and manage staff work schedules, including shift assignments and break coverage, in collaboration with management
  • Support the onboarding and performance development of staff by providing ongoing coaching and feedback
  • Participate in regular team meetings and contribute ideas for improving efficiency, customer satisfaction, and team morale
  • Ensure dining, kitchen, and service areas are kept clean, organized, and safe in accordance with company and regulatory standards
  • Perform hands-on duties as required during busy periods, including food preparation, line service, cashiering, or cleaning tasks

Credentials (Certificates, Licences, Memberships, Courses)

  • Safe Food Handling Certificate required or willingness to obtain shortly after hire
  • Any additional food safety, WHMIS, or occupational health and safety training is an asset

Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities

  • Fast-paced environment with frequent standing and walking throughout the shift
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of supplies, containers, and small equipment (within reasonable limits)
  • Periods of working under pressure, particularly during meal rushes and special events
  • Repetitive tasks such as portioning, checking products, or operating POS equipment
  • Need for attention to detail when checking orders, monitoring food quality, and completing records
