Job Overview
Zen Sanuki Udon is hiring an experienced Chef to lead daily kitchen operations and elevate our Japanese cuisine program in Scarborough. This role is ideal for a hands-on culinary leader with strong knowledge of Japanese cooking, sushi preparation techniques, and seafood-focused dishes. You will plan menus, create new recipes, supervise and train kitchen staff, manage food requisitions, and ensure every dish meets strict standards for taste, presentation, and consistency. Experience

  • 3 years to less than 5 years of experience as a chef or senior cook in a restaurant kitchen
  • Experience with Japanese cuisine and sushi preparation is required or strongly preferred

Key Responsibilities (Tasks)

  • Supervise activities of specialist chefs, chefs, cooks, and other kitchen workers to maintain speed, quality, and consistency
  • Supervise cooks and other kitchen staff, including station assignments, workflow, and service coordination
  • Instruct cooks in preparation, cooking, garnishing, and presentation of food to meet restaurant standards
  • Prepare and cook food on a regular basis and for special guests or functions when required
  • Prepare and cook meals or specialty foods, including Japanese dishes, seafood items, and cold kitchen components
  • Plan menus and ensure food meets quality standards for flavour, portioning, presentation, and freshness
  • Create new recipes and contribute to seasonal features and menu development
  • Prepare dishes for customers with food allergies or intolerances, following safe handling and cross-contamination controls
  • Requisition food and kitchen supplies; support ordering, receiving, and stock rotation to control waste and maintain freshness
  • Train staff in preparation, cooking, and handling of food, including hygiene and food safety expectations
  • Maintain a clean, organized kitchen and ensure safe food handling practices are followed during prep and service
  • Support quality control by tasting, checking plating, and correcting issues before food leaves the kitchen
