Job Title: Electrical Engineer β Substation Physical Design
π Location: Toronto, ON (Also available in Calgary & Ottawa)
π² Salary: $98,000 – $120,000 per year (Commensurate with experience)
π Job Type: Permanent, Full-time
Arup is seeking an experienced Senior Substation Physical Electrical Engineer to lead the design and development of utility-scale renewable energy and distributed generation projects. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering substation physical engineering designs and packages, supporting power generation and transmission projects. Key Responsibilities
πΉ Lead substation physical engineering designs for utility-scale renewable energy projects.
πΉ Prepare construction drawings (General Arrangement, Equipment Plans, Grounding Plans, Raceway Plans, Bill of Materials, and more).
πΉ Oversee full electrical system designs for HV/MV substations, solar plants, power storage, microgrids, and control systems.
πΉ Conduct key studies, including grounding (step & touch), bus force calculations, and lightning protection.
πΉ Develop technical reports and consulting studies for substation design projects.
πΉ Mentor and support junior engineers while promoting continuous learning.
πΉ Maintain and develop strong client relationships through effective communication and project delivery.
πΉ Collaborate on proposal preparation, including scope definition and resource planning.
Required Skills & Qualifications
β
Bachelorβs degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
β
Minimum 6 years of experience in substation engineering & design for utility-scale projects.
β
Strong understanding of IEEE substation design standards and industry regulations.
β
Experience in power system studies (lightning protection, auxiliary transformer sizing, grounding).
β
AutoCAD proficiency is required.
β
EIT certification preferred; Professional Engineer (PE) license and NCEES accreditation (for U.S. projects) are strong assets.
β
Proven leadership experience managing junior engineers and technical teams.
β
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

Education & Certifications Required
- π Bachelorβs degree in Electrical Engineering (or higher).
- π Professional Engineer (PE) or EIT designation (strong asset).
- π NCEES Accreditation (for U.S. projects is preferred).
- π Certifications in Power System Analysis & Protection (beneficial).
