Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the health and well-being of animals in care, maintaining proper diet, hydration, and medical needs.
  • Administer approved medications under the supervision of veterinarians or authorized shelter staff.
  • Support behavior modification activities related to handling, husbandry, and socialization.
  • Assist with euthanasia when necessary, ensuring a humane and compassionate process.
  • Perform farm animal adoptions and ensure compliance with BC SPCA procedures.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and upkeep of barn stalls, pastures, paddocks, and farm equipment.
  • Provide excellent customer service to internal staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Assist in cruelty investigations, documenting findings for further action.
  • Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers, attending meetings as required.
  • Act as a lead hand on barn matters in the absence of the Manager.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum two years of experience working with farm animals, particularly large animals such as horses.
  • Valid Class N or 5 BC Driver’s License with a clean driver’s abstract.
  • Strong knowledge of farm animals, their breeds, characteristics, and common diseases.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete tasks efficiently.
  • Physically capable of heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling; must not have allergies to farm animals.
  • Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite, databases).
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Alignment with the mission and values of BC SPCA.
