Alberta Health Services (AHS) is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Health Care Aide (HCA) to join our team. As an HCA, you will provide essential support to patients, assisting with daily living activities, monitoring patient well-being, and working closely with nurses and other healthcare professionals to ensure high-quality care.
Description
As a Health Care Aide, you will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to provide personal care and support services to patients who require short-term assistance or ongoing care. You will play a key role in assisting with hygiene, mobility, nutrition, recreation, and safety needs. Additionally, you will help with organized activities and observe and report on patients’ mood, health, and overall well-being.
You will work under the supervision of a regulated health professional, ensuring a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors while maintaining effective communication with healthcare professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist patients with personal hygiene, mobility, and daily activities.
- Provide companionship and emotional support.
- Help with meal preparation and feeding as needed.
- Monitor and report changes in patients’ conditions to nursing staff.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and supportive environment.
- Follow facility policies and procedures in providing patient care.
- Assist in maintaining medical records and documentation.

Required Qualifications
- Completion of a Health Care Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire.
- Active directory status on the Alberta Health Care Aide Directory (confirmation letter required).
- Nursing students currently enrolled in an approved Alberta nursing program with at least 100 hours of practicum will be considered.
- Compliance with all health and safety regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in Long-Term Care (LTC).
- Familiarity with Connect Care systems.
- Active status on the HCA registry.
Security Screening
A satisfactory criminal record check and/or Vulnerable Sector Search is required before the first day of work. Employees must disclose any charges or convictions that occur during employment.
Work Environment
- Fast-paced healthcare setting, including hospitals, care homes, and patient residences.
- Requires lifting, bending, and extended periods of standing.
- Interaction with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
- Potential exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous materials.

Education and Certification
- Health Care Aide Certificate from a recognized institution.
- Enrollment in Alberta Health Care Aide Directory.
- Basic First Aid and CPR certification (preferred).
