Job Overview
BLACKJACK FARMS is looking for reliable, hardworking General Labourers to join our organic vegetable operation in Wheatley, Ontario. You will work hands-on with bell peppers and other produce, performing tasks from planting and crop care to harvesting, sorting, and packing. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy active, outdoor (and greenhouse) work, are comfortable in warm environments, and want stable, full-time employment with opportunities to learn modern farming practices. No previous farm experience is required – we will provide full training for motivated workers who are ready to learn and commit to the season and beyond.

Experience

• No prior experience required – employer will train
• Any experience with farming, greenhouse work, landscaping, or physically demanding labour is an asset

Work Site Environment

• Organic farming operation
• Hot conditions (greenhouses and/or fields during summer and warm periods)
• May be humid and wet at times due to irrigation and watering
• Dusty and dirty conditions typical of active farm work
• Fast-paced harvest environment during peak season

Work Setting

• Rural area near Wheatley, ON
• Work primarily on-farm in fields and/or greenhouses
• Relocation costs are not covered by the employer
• Candidates must be willing to relocate and arrange their own accommodation and transportation to the farm

Key Responsibilities (Tasks)

• Cut agricultural crops according to instructions and quality standards
• Hand harvest vegetables (especially bell peppers), ensuring gentle handling to avoid damage
• Harvest crops efficiently to meet daily and seasonal production targets
• Grade vegetables and fruits into different grades according to size, shape, colour, and volume to achieve maximum market value
• Sort fruits and vegetables to remove damaged, diseased, or substandard produce
• Pack fruits and vegetables into boxes, bins, or other containers, ensuring correct labelling and careful handling
• Plant, cultivate, and irrigate crops as directed, including seeding, transplanting, watering, and basic plant care tasks
• Assist with weeding, thinning, and general crop maintenance to promote healthy plant growth
• Use basic hand tools safely and correctly (e.g., knives, clippers, hoes, rakes)
• Operate and assist with basic farm and harvesting equipment after training and under supervision
• Follow all food safety and hygiene procedures, including proper handling and cleanliness in harvest and packing areas
• Help with general farm clean-up, including removing plant waste, cleaning work areas, and organizing tools and supplies
• Follow directions from supervisors and team leads regarding daily priorities and tasks
• Support other general farm duties as needed to keep operations running smoothly throughout the season

Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities

• Ability to work independently once tasks are explained and demonstrated
• Fast-paced environment, particularly during harvest and peak production periods
• Repetitive tasks such as picking, sorting, bending, and lifting through the shift
• Physically demanding role requiring good stamina and overall fitness
• Standing and walking for extended periods on concrete, soil, or uneven ground
• Frequent bending, crouching, kneeling, and reaching while planting, weeding, and harvesting
• Walking between rows and sections of fields or greenhouses throughout the day
• Handling weights up to 23 kg (50 lbs), including boxes of produce and equipment
• Strong hand–eye coordination required for precise picking, grading, and packing
• Ability to distinguish between colours for accurate grading and sorting of produce
• High attention to detail to maintain quality standards for organic vegetables
