Job Overview
A private household in Vancouver, British Columbia is seeking a caring, reliable Home Support Worker to provide day‑to‑day assistance and companionship to an elderly client. You will support personal care, exercise, meal preparation, light housekeeping, and daily routines to help the client live safely and comfortably at home. Optional live‑in accommodation is available at no charge, making this a great opportunity for both local and international candidates. This role is ideal for someone who genuinely enjoys helping seniors, is flexible with working hours, and is looking to build a long‑term, professional caregiving career in Canada.

Languages: English

Education

  • Secondary (high) school graduation certificate, or
  • Equivalent education and/or experience in a related field

Experience

  • 1 to less than 7 months of recent experience as a home support worker, personal support worker, caregiver, nursing aide, or in a similar direct‑care role
  • Experience working with elderly clients in a home or community setting is an asset

Work Site Environment

  • Non-smoking home

Work Setting

  • Employer’s private home in Vancouver, BC
  • One‑on‑one support to an elderly client in a residential neighbourhood
  • Optional accommodation available at no charge on a live‑in basis (not a condition of employment; live‑out candidates are also welcome)

Key Responsibilities (Tasks)

  • Assist client with bathing, grooming, dressing, and other aspects of personal hygiene in a respectful and dignified manner
  • Assist client in water (e.g., pool) for therapeutic or recreational activities, following safety guidelines and care instructions
  • Assist in regular exercise such as walks and simple mobility routines, in accordance with the client’s abilities and any recommendations from healthcare professionals
  • Provide companionship and emotional support through conversation, shared activities, and attentive presence
  • Plan, prepare, and cook nutritious meals and snacks that reflect the client’s dietary needs, preferences, and any medical restrictions
  • Plan therapeutic diets and menus as directed, considering nutritional balance and physician/dietitian guidance where applicable
  • Serve meals and ensure safe, comfortable eating conditions, providing assistance as needed
  • Shop for food and household supplies according to lists and budget provided by the employer
  • Launder clothing and household linens; dry, fold, and put away items neatly
  • Mend clothing and linens as needed (e.g., minor repairs, buttons)
  • Perform light housekeeping and cleaning duties related to the client’s care and common areas, such as tidying rooms, washing dishes, wiping surfaces, and keeping the environment clean and safe
  • Help maintain a calm, organized, and safe home environment by identifying and reducing potential hazards (e.g., clutter, wet floors, poor lighting)
  • Observe and report any changes in the client’s physical or emotional condition (e.g., appetite, mobility, mood, pain) to the employer promptly
  • Follow any care plans, routines, and special instructions provided by the family or healthcare professionals
  • Respect client privacy and confidentiality at all times

  • Frequent bending, crouching, kneeling, and reaching while assisting with personal care, housekeeping, and mobility
  • Standing and walking for extended periods when supporting exercise, outings, or household tasks
  • Physically demanding role with handling of heavy loads up to 23 kg (50 lbs), including assisting the client with transfers or repositioning, and handling laundry or supplies
  • Repetitive tasks such as cleaning, laundry, and certain care activities
  • Fast‑paced at times, with the need to manage multiple tasks and respond to changing client needs
  • Work under pressure occasionally, especially when responding to urgent needs or changes in the client’s condition

  • Strong client focus, with genuine compassion and respect for the elderly client’s dignity and preferences
  • Dependability and reliability, with a high level of trustworthiness and integrity
  • Efficient interpersonal skills; able to communicate clearly and kindly with the client and family members
  • Excellent oral communication skills, including attentive listening and clear, respectful speech
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing routines, schedules, and client health needs
  • Initiative in recognizing what needs to be done and taking appropriate action without constant direction
  • Sound judgment when responding to client needs, safety issues, and unexpected situations
  • Well organized; able to prioritize tasks, maintain a tidy environment, and keep track of household needs
  • Strong team player mindset, cooperating effectively with family members and any other care providers
  • Patience and emotional resilience, particularly when supporting an elderly person who may have limitations, pain, or mood changes
  • Honesty and respect for privacy, cultural values, and household rules

Additional Assets (Not Required but Preferred)

  • CPR and First Aid certification
  • Any caregiver, personal support worker, or healthcare aide training
  • Experience with therapeutic diets or special dietary requirements
  • Familiarity with mobility aids (e.g., walker, cane, wheelchair) and safe transfer techniques
